Should you maintain tropical hardwood decks?
Located in Lake Oswego’s Mountain Park area, Joel’s home has a complex 10-year-old deck system with five different zones. This deck is a high-quality Ipe hardwood that can last up to 50 years. With Ipe tropical hardwood, you have two choices for maintenance — to forgo regular staining and allow the wood fade and acquire a grey patina or use oil-based stains that will give the wood a deeper, more vibrant color. We recommend to homeowners they protect the original hue of the wood, in which case annual maintenance is required to clean the wood and stain with a UV-protectant oil. The good news is that if you get behind on yearly maintenance, you can always sand it down and stain to get the wood back to its original glory.
We keep your home clean throughout the project
We knew restoration was going to be challenging for this project because of the five different zones: home front entry, main floor back deck, upper back deck, master bedroom deck, and the basement deck. In addition to these zones, there were also stairs connecting the main floor to the upper deck. Each deck needed to be washed, dried, sanded, and stained. We sanded the wood down to about a 100 grit feel throughout, and then applied the UV-protectant oil. We strive to keep our job sites as clean as possible, which meant hoisting equipment to the upper levels to avoid tracking debris inside the home. For additional convenience to the homeowner, we offer to move any patio furniture before and after the project as an optional add-on.
The scope of this project only included refinishing and staining; however, as we were working, we found a few boards popping up and fixed those at no additional cost. Typically, and as was the case with this project, we can fix these boards by replacing the stainless steel screws. Structural reinforcement may occasionally be required if the integrity of the decking system has been compromised.
The project took three days to complete, and both our team and the customer were happy with the final product. We had a crew of one to three working each day and were able to finish on time and on budget. Another successfully refinished deck by NW Surface Cleaners!
